Police say the victim saw a man leaving his Dunlop Street home about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
A laptop and coin jar were stolen but recovered.
The victim chased the man, following him to Rowan Street where he appeared to try hide under a bridge by the One Mile Creek.
Police arrived and the man tried to evade arrest but was caught hiding in the creek bed.
A 34-year-old Wangaratta man was taken to Wangaratta police station and subsequently charged with burglary, theft and criminal damage.
The man was bailed to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates Court on July 28.
