Sunday marks the first of the winter’s mini series for junior cross country skiers.
From 11am races for under-7s through to under-19s will be held in the Nordic Bowl at Falls Creek over distances varying from 500 metres to 2½ kilometres.
The aim is to boost the numbers at the Joey Hoppet later in the year and bring people to or back to the sport.
Bob Cranage has been running Tuesday afternoon roller skiing sessions out of Victory Lutheran College.
“The thinking is a little like Little Athletics, give the families and kids a taste of the sport, teach them the basics and if they want to pursue it further we are there too,” he said.
“We have somewhere between 10 and 20 kids most weeks.
“With the races the idea is to bring to kids along against their own ability as opposed to those kids who are part of the state squad.”
