But the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce is keen for the council to go further.
It is suggesting most traders would support the installation of the cameras in public places, not just on or in the council’s buildings.
Cr Michael Fraser said the council’s debate at its meeting last week was not about where or when the cameras would be installed but would enable the council to go ahead if it felt the need to address the issue of CCTV surveillance.
He said there was no plan before the council to install cameras, while the report to the council said police believed CCTV in public places wasn’t needed because crime had reduced across the city.
The report suggested that the creation of a register of local businesses with CCTV might go ahead.
That would allow police to use information in circumstances where officers were investigating crimes in a particular area.
Chamber leaders think that’s a good idea and would work with the council on it.
