Mr Hacker, who has been in charge of the plant for the past 3½ years, says the Albury mill would soon be producing 100 per cent of the newsprint used in Australia.
He says there is little doubt the Albury mill will be the last standing in the region and he paid credit to the local workforce and their commitment to Norske Skog.
Mr Hacker said the company had achieved savings of up to $90 per tonne on the 270,000 tonnes of newsprint produced annually and it was committed to a $50 million investment at the Albury mill to build a biomass boiler and steam turbine to power the site.
Norske Skog continues to be a significant employer on the Border with 185 people working at the Albury mill and the company’s ongoing investment is important in maintaining that employment, in spite of changing circumstances for the industry sector.
We farewell Mr Hacker and wish him well on his retirement; and we welcome his replacement Milo Foster, who is due to start at the plant within a fortnight.
