That was how Bald Archy Prize founder and director Peter Batey explained this year’s flood of entries featuring politician Clive Palmer.
Along with a painting of Julia Gillard as Medusa and Gai Waterhouse with the mouth of a horse, Mr Batey said it was the funniest collection of paintings he’d seen in 21 years.
The Archibald Prize parody opened an exhibition of 50 finalists at Swanpool last night.
It will be the only showing in Victoria.
“If you come to the Bald Archys you will see total strangers talking and laughing within a minute unlike a normal art exhibition where people are like they are in a church,” Mr Batey said.
A Miley Cyrus inspired painting of Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson in “sexy” shorts swinging on a wrecking ball took out first place this year.
“He is celebrating a Test win and is very thrilled about the whole thing,” Mr Batey said.
The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm for the next fortnight at the Swanpool and District Memorial Hall with an entry fee of $5.
It will open in Corowa in September.
