Perhaps the greatest Roo of all, Wayne Carey, was guest speaker at a sponsors’ day as coach Craig Coonan’s side delivered a 13.8 (86) to 5.11 (41) victory.
It was a solid team performance that shows things are finally coming together for the Roos.
“He (Carey) might have had an effect,” Coonan said.
“But it was more that the boys had a good, four-quarter effort for the first time this year.
“The ground was pretty chopped-up and we played the conditions well and didn’t muck around with it — we delivered the ball long and had numbers at the ball which was pleasing.
“And they worked as a group which is good.”
Though Coonan said finals weren’t on the Roos’ radar, there were plenty of good signs at the club.
“Potentially we’re a lot better than where we’re sitting, it has taken time to get a bit of belief, but that was a real step forward.
“Now hopefully we can keep going and finish the season well.
“If we do scrape in to finals we have to rely on a lot of sides falling over ... we just have to keep going forward, playing footy like we did this week.”
Coonan said it was a matter of consistency.
And when the Roos finally bring it all together, as they did on Saturday, it’s hard to pick them apart.
“Across the board there were a lot of players that stood up,” Coonan said.
“There were no individuals — I could name 15 or 16 blokes and I’d be unfair to the other four or five because they might not have had the possessions but they did a job on their man.
“Sam Evans played well, his brother Adam played well, Joel Goodwin, Chris Healy — I couldn’t put anyone in front of anyone else.”
The Roos didn’t have it all their own way.
After half-time they had nobody left on the bench, with Cohan Vincent forced to leave the groundout with a broken collar bone.
The victory was a turnaround from their second round clash, when Campbell Brown booted 10 for the Blues.
