After nearly causing one of the boilovers of the season last week against Henty, the Magpies withstood a fierce final-quarter fightback from the Power to win 10.11 (71) to 10.7 (67).
The Power has slipped from sixth to eighth on the ladder with a huge question mark over their finals credentials with key forwards Luke Cowan (shoulder) and Doug Lavis (hamstring) expected to be sidelined for several more weeks.
Versatile tall Nick Mitas was the Magpies’ best after a tireless display in the ruck.
Alex Jones and Jarman Teesdale were the major beneficiaries of his dominance as they racked up plenty of touches in the midfield and ran hard all day.
Adding further merit to the win, the Magpies lost classy midfielder Brad Horn with a calf complaint early in the match and he is expected to miss the next fortnight.
Coach Corey Lambert was thrilled for his players to finally get some reward for effort after pushing fourth-placed Henty to the limit the previous week.
“The players have being doing a great job and working really hard and are starting to embrace the game plan we are trying to implement,” Lambert said.
“We have made some progress in the past two weeks and to get the result on Saturday just cements some of the things we have been trying to put in place and gives them a bit of confidence.
“We have been able to remain competitive for most of the season with the exception of the Holbrook game where we were blown off the park.
“I said to the boys after the Henty game that honourable losses are no longer acceptable and a thing of the past and I think the message is really starting to sink in.”
