The major focus of the overnight visit on July 31 is expected to be the official opening of the Wagga Road ambulance station, funding for which was announced by his predecessor, former Premier Barry O’Farrell, during his only visit to Albury in 2012.
The planned visit has been welcomed by member for Albury Greg Aplin, who says Mr Baird wants to see what has been achieved in the region since making a previous commitment as treasurer to visit the city.
He will also take the opportunity to meet with business and community leaders.
The decision will no doubt be a relief to Mr Aplin to have Mr Baird’s ear on home turf at a time when he has been criticised by some within local councils for failing to deliver on service and development needs within the region.
Hopefully Mr Baird will have every opportunity to meet as many people as possible while in Albury, although his time is likely to be at a premium.
It remains to be seen whether Mr Baird will make new funding announcements during his visit, although plenty of items remain on local wish-lists.
