The figures reveal physical violence and persistent misbehaviour as the most common reasons for the expulsions.
Public Schools NSW director for Albury, Peter Smith, says the numbers do not reflect increased bad behaviour among students.
Instead, he says schools are safer by expelling certain students.
Mr Smith makes the point the number of expulsions — 20 from schools throughout the Riverina — is small considering the number of students.
He says the department works with students and their families to find an alternative school for them rather than excluding them from the public system.
Parents don’t believe the rise in suspensions and expulsions is indicative of a problem in public schools.
They say they would prefer the discipline to be enforced at schools in order to keep other children safe.
Mr Smith also dispels the suggestion that suspension is an easy way out for students.
Many students serve their suspension in school, and are given work to do, he says.
