Charles Sturt University research scientist Barney Foran said the tax could have brought significant change.

“The rhetoric from Parliament House is confusing,” he said.

“I heard axing it will save us money on electricity and gas, but that was only what could happen in future if we kept the tax.

Mr Foran said the tax had been a “Band-Aid” for a growing problem.

The member for Indi Cathy McGowan was “sad” the tax had been scrapped and she would like to see a trading scheme.

“We must take action,” she said.

“If Direct Action is passed, I’ll work with the people of Indi to cut pollution.

“The government can repeal the carbon tax, but what’s it doing about climate change?”

Wodonga Chamber of Commerce’s Bernie Squire said axing the tax could led to consumers having more money for discretionary spending.

“But if the costs aren’t passed back, only the big end of town — the utility companies — will benefit,” he said.

The member for Farrer Sussan Ley said the legislation ensured suppliers of electricity, natural gas and synthetic greenhouse gases must pass on all savings.

She also said repealing the tax would cut 9 per cent from household bills.
