Nominations for the Border’s richest juvenile race were released yesterday with Moody nominating five of the 35 runners, down from 49 last year.
Debutantes Caveka, Clover Lane, San Nicasio and She Brings Hope alongside Fifty Eight Facets, that finished third on debut at Morphettville earlier this month, are Moody’s entries.
The leading Melbourne trainer last won the two-year-old classic in 2010 with Sayahailmary after having previously won with Live In Sin in 2008 and Neprotain in 2004.
Moody nominated four runners last year but failed to have a starter.
San Nicasio and Caveka appear to be the most likely acceptors of the Moody runners — his other three are also nominated for Sandown on Sunday.
For the second successive year the Jack Maher Classic has been granted lucrative VOBIS Gold and Super VOBIS status.
Under the scheme, the owner of a qualified horse will earn an extra $9000 if Super VOBIS qualified and an extra $20,000 if VOBIS Gold qualified, on top of the $15,000 prizemoney for winning.
In another coup for Wodonga and District Turf Club, leading Melbourne trainers David Hayes, Mick Price and Robbie Griffiths have also nominated multiple runners.
Local trainers are also well represented through Brian Cox, Brett Cavanough, Peter Maher, David O’Prey, Sylvia Thompson, Gerald Egan and John and Chris Ledger.
Maher has nominated unraced pair Bad Obsession and Teen Rene for the race named in honour of his late father.
Sunday’s meeting will coincide with the club’s annual member’s day.
Members who renew or join before Sunday receive a $10 TAB voucher and two free drinks on the day.
Existing members, who refer a friend to join, will go into the draw to win the ultimate race day experience on Caulfield Guineas Day.
