A Melbourne man, 26, suffered minor injuries after his semi-trailer left the freeway about one kilometre from the Ironbark rest area and rolled onto its side soon after 7am.
Wodonga highway patrol’s Leading Sen-Constable Glen Allerdice said the semi-trailer, carrying glass, left the road for “some unknown reason”.
“Police are still investigating what caused the driver to leave the road,” he said.
“It’s going to be a big clean-up, there’s about 40,000 kilograms of broken glass.
“The man has been released from Wodonga hospital.”
Police, ambulance, fire services and VicRoads attended.
Northbound lanes remained closed at the Beechworth-Chiltern Road late yesterday afternoon, but VicRoads regional director Bryan Sherritt expected normal traffic conditions to resume later in the evening.
A detour to the Murray Valley Highway was established via the Chiltern-Howlong Road.
Mr Sherritt said a site inspection would have to be completed and the cleared roadway declared safe before the road could be re-opened.
“The responsible transport company has engaged an authorised contractor to manage the salvage and glass clean–up operations,” he said.
