In freezing conditions, Xavier’s senior students again showed themselves to be the best on the Border by winning the school football competition for the third year running.

Neither side gave an inch in chilly conditions, with several big hits and tackles that wouldn’t have been out of place at club level.

Xavier looked in control early when it charged to a 17-point lead at quarter-time.

However, Scots made its move in the second term, dominating the stoppages and showing far more intent than its more talented opponent to be down by just four points at half-time.

But the favourite again put its foot down in the third, with Xavier booting five goals to one that term to shoot to a 28-point lead at the final change.

They weren’t troubled from there.

Jeremy Duck and Harry Tanner were the standouts for Xavier, with Albury youngster Duck awarded the medal for best on ground.

Zach Sproule (five goals) and Jacob Cincurak also contributed.

Damon Poole and Jack Wotherspoon were Scots’ best.

The Xavier Tanner Shield final, for students in years 9 and 10, will be held on August 13 at John Foord Oval between Xavier and Corowa High.
