So much so that he will ride more than 5300 kilometres in six days in September to raise money for research into the disease.
Accompanied by eight other riders, he will ride his 2008 Triumph Bonneville from the Puckapunyal army base to Uluru and back.
He yesterday said The Long Ride had seemed an appropriate way to honour his friend, who is now recovering, given his love of motorcycles.
“He is a year post-op but is still affected by it,” Mr Butterworth said.
“It has affected how he feels as a man and he’s more vulnerable.”
Mr Butterworth is confident he will raise more than his $1000 target — he has already collected $650 rattling tins at pubs.
He has modified his bike’s gears, seat and luggage space and hopes he does not have too many flat tyres.
He and his group will “rough it” in swags by the road each night during the ride, which starts on September 28.
Tomorrow the Wodonga resident, who is a member of the Morgan Country Car Club, will be again out raising money with a vehicle display at Wodonga’s Blazing Stump Hotel.
