Jason Ian Hooper used a four-wheel drive with a bullbar to chase the cow around a paddock before ramming it.

It was knocked to the ground and a witness saw Hooper get out of his vehicle and repeatedly kick the cow.

The RSPCA made an application in Corowa Local Court for a five-year ban on Hooper having livestock, but magistrate Tony Murray reduced the period to one year.

Hooper, 36, of Steel Street, pleaded guilty. He was convicted and fined $700 with a payment going to the RSPCA.

Mr Murray was told Hooper acted out of frustration because the cow kept getting out of a paddock.

His actions were reported to police at Corowa, who referred the matter to RSPCA inspector Lionel Smith.

When Inspector Smith spoke to Hooper by phone on August 5 last year, he said: “I heard you were looking for me.”

“She kept getting out. I gave her a bump, was all. I fixed the fences up since.”

Hooper was asked about the condition of the cow and said: “She’s there. Nothing wrong with her. Just taught her a lesson, that’s all.”

It was about 5.30pm on July 26, 2013, when Hooper’s vehicle was seen swerving around a small paddock of about seven hectares at speed.

There were four adult cattle and some sheep, all owned by Hooper in the paddock bounded by Adam, Cotton and Lucan streets at Corowa.

He chased the Angus cow for about 35 to 40 seconds before the side of the truck grazed the cow’s side.

The cow stopped, Hooper got out and kicked at the cow saying: “You stupid bitch. How do you like that?”

Hooper got back in his truck when the cow started running and resumed the chase for about 30 seconds.

The cow seemed to be exhausted, stopped in front of the truck and was nudged by the bull bar before being rammed.

The back legs of the cow slipped out and under the front of the truck.

Hooper kicked the cow and then drove off across the paddock.

Inspector Smith began an inquiry into the incident after receiving a complaint from the person who witnessed what took place.

After the incident, Hooper got rid of the cattle and sheep.
