After participating with the “The Relaywoods” team for years, the Wodonga woman has stepped up and joined the organising committee of what is now the second-most successful Relay for Life event in Australia.
“It was a bit daunting at the start, but I thought I’d give it a try and use my skills to help the cause,” she said.
Ms Baker has many reasons for her passion for the event. She has friends and family who have suffered cancer and she, too, is a survivor of the illness.
She had a brain tumour when just 4 and, while it was caught early, her life was about check-ups and treatments until she was 14.
She said events like the relay kept the need for research and fund-raising in the spotlight.
“Even though people are aware, when you get involved in things like this with the whole community, it does wake you up to the extent of it,” she said.
“It make you more understanding of what people go through.”
Ms Baker joined the Border Relay for Life crew on Dean Street on Saturday, encouraging people to sign on for this year’s event at the Wodonga Raiders Football Ground on October 25 and 26.
Chairman Carl Fried- lieb said 63 teams had registered — 13 more than this time last year.
The event raised $460,000 for the NSW Cancer Council last year.
A meeting will be held for new and experienced participants tomorrow at the Commercial Club from 7pm.
