Initial reports were a “large stash” had been found, which police said was 294 tablets.
Half a gram of methamphetamine and 20 millilitres of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or fantasy) was also found in the car when it was stopped on the Hume Highway about 2.15am.
A man, 19, from Sandy Creek, was charged with drug trafficking, possession and use and will face Wodonga Magistrates Court on September 9.
Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said officers were investigating the origin and destination of the drugs.
“It’s always pleasing to get a result of this type, particularly when it’s unexpected,” he said.
“It can only further disrupt the supply of drugs in the area.
“The destination of these drugs is still under investigation.
“It’s certainly something that we will pursue as a matter of course.”
The driver of the vehicle is alleged to have driven dangerously on the highway before being stopped by officers.
The man raised further concerns by appearing drug-affected while speaking to police.
“The Hume is obviously a particular focus for not only road safety, but as a method of transport used by some traffickers,” Detective Sgt Simpfendorfer said.
“We keep our eye on it fairly regularly.
“In this case it has come up trumps.”
The drugs will be sent to Melbourne for analysis if the case is disputed and will eventually be destroyed.
“It’s a positive outcome,” Detective Sgt Simpfendorfer said.
