Cavanough finished the season on 48 winners after Cresta Condor saluted at Wagga on Friday in the final meeting of the SDRA season.
The leading trainer has won the title on nine previous occasions and eclipsed his previous best of 40 winners in the SDRA.
Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland broke Cavanough’s stranglehold, claiming the premiership for the past two seasons.
“I’m pretty chuffed to regain the premiership,” Cavanough said.
“But I’m not getting too carried away and the way I see it, it’s just part of the business to try and train as many winners as I can.
“You have to, otherwise people stop coming through the door.
“If you run a good business they will keep coming — if you don’t they will go somewhere else.”
Cavanough defeated Sutherland (32) and fellow Wagga trainers Chris Heywood (31) and Gary Colvin (23).
Wodonga’s Brian Cox (18) rounded out the top five.
Cavanough attributed his stellar season to his outstanding crop of three-year-olds including Just A Bullet, Scatcat and The Monstar.
“I’ve had a real good batch of young horses who were able to string together multiple wins and rise through their grades pretty quickly,” he said.
“They also went to town and have all run places, which is exciting for the future.
“Just A Bullet was beaten a head by Miss Steele at Moonee Valley in March and she won a group 3 race at Morphettville at her next start.”
Cavanough said Just A Bullet was back in work and would resume in early September.
Scatcat is recovering from a tendon injury while The Monstar is in the spelling paddock after winning six of 12 races in his first preparation.
Canberra-based hoop Brendan Ward took out the jockey’s premiership with 37 wins.
Ward easily defeated Jake Duffy (28), last year’s winner Nick Souquet (25), Simon Miller (25) and apprentice Nick Heywood (24).
