THE inquest was told Albury man Max Martin was involved in the killing of Bronwynne Richardson.
There was evidence that Martin and Geoffrey Charles Brown sexually assaulted Ms Richardson while two other men, Ross Eames and Kevin Newman, watched, but had no involvement.
Martin died in Queensland in 1995, but if he was involved there was a bizarre twist.
He had been released from jail on October 12, 1973, the day Ms Richardson was abducted.
It was revealed during the inquest that Martin had an old Holden and there was considerable evidence this week about a Holden seen leaving the scene.
Deputy state coroner Carmel Forbes was told that Martin always wore black clothes and had shoulder length hair.
Martin was best man at the wedding of Peter Newey, who gave a description of him.
"He probably had a bit of a moustache," Mr Newey said.
"I think he had sideburns. That was the go back then."
Martin was described as being about 175 centimetres tall with a thin build and hair done in the style of Elvis.
Solicitor Mark Cronin, who represented Mr Brown, asked whether Martin dressed in the old rocker style and Mr Newey replied: "Yes".
Mr Newey said Martin had an interest in stock car racing with events held at Wahgunyah and Beechworth.
Ms Forbes told Mr Newey she had seen a document which indicated Martin was released from jail on October 12.
"You do not have a memory of Max being in custody about that time," Ms Forbes asked.
"No," replied Mr Newey.
He was asked whether Martin remained around Albury after the murder of Ms Richardson.
"I think he was still around town," Mr Newey said.
There was a twist involving Mr Newman.
His younger brother, Peter, was a member of the Border Rescue Squad crew who found Ms Richardson's body.
Later he had terrible nightmares about her death.
Kevin Newman died in 1997.
