WODONGA residents will see a transformation in the city’s urban growth in the years to come after the council yesterday gave the nod to create a new zone between Baranduda and Leneva that will provide for the building of 14,000 homes to house 35,000 people.

The council will now ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to amend the Wodonga Planning Scheme ahead of further planning for the project by the Melbourne-based Metropolitan Planning Authority.
But while councillors have supported the move, they have urged a note of caution that the city must not lose control over the planning process.
Wodonga mayor Rod Wangman said experts from the planning authority should be encouraged to come to the area to ensure they appreciate the council’s vision for its urban development and growth.
The city has also committed to undertaking consultation with landholders in the zone which covers 500 hectares of farming land and a rural living zone of about 94 hectares.
Wodonga Council should also ensure it receives the $250,000 promised by the Victorian government towards planning for the growth corridor.
