ALBURY LIBRARY MUSEUM
ALBURY REGIONAL ART GALLERY PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION
AUGUST 19
Albury Council is conducting a free public information session to give the community the opportunity to be updated on the progress of the Art Gallery redevelopment project. The project has been gearing up since the successful announcement of funding in mid-2012 for the delivery of the project by mid-2015. With the completion of the detailed design and the announcement of the construction contract the project has taken off and is surpassing expectations in design, function and usability. The Gallery will form the last pillar in Albury’s Cultural Precinct, bringing together four major cultural services — library, performing arts, museum and gallery. Located within 100 meters of each the facilities will only be separated by beautiful open public green space and absolutely surrounded by the commercial and retail heart of a major regional centre. The new Albury Regional Art Gallery will be the largest and leading multipurpose cultural building of its kind within the Murray/Riverina region, a must-visit attraction to visitors and locals alike. Come alone and find out more about this exciting project and its development from the Albury Council staff who have been leading this project. Bookings: phone (02) 6043 5800 or email artgallery@alburycity.nsw.gov.au.
RUFUS THE NUMBAT: DAVID MILLER
UNTIL SEPTEMBER 4
Don’t miss this exhibition of David Miller’s superb illustrations from his children’s picture book Rufus the Numbat. The illustrations, photographs of David’s dramatic and colourful 3D paper sculptures, tell the story of Rufus the Numbat who walks out of the bush and into town, creating all sorts of mayhem. Rufus does not care for cappuccinos or cream cake, or for the town and its parade and noise. David Miller's imaginative tale challenges us to wonder what would happen if animals infringed on the lives of humans and the fragile relationship between humans and animals. Rufus the Numbat was shortlisted for the Wilderness Society’s 2011 Environmental Award for Children’s Literature. Kick off Australian Children’s Book Week and National Science Week 2014 with a special Storytime with David Miller. Includes a guided walk with the author through his exhibition, 11am Saturday, August 16.
Note: The Albury Library Museum's historical exhibitions are listed in the History section below.

ARTS SPACE WODONGA
AT THE TABLE EXHIBITION
UNTIL AUGUST 23
Using the kitchen table as a meeting place, three artists — Caryn Giblin, Susan Morris and Paula Watson — have gathered together over several months to explore the qualities of everyday objects and treasured heirlooms. They discovered these objects have the potential to liberate memories, stories and discussions. With still life observation as the initial inspiration for creation, this collaborative exhibition brings together the unique styles of these three artists. It offers insight into their support and collaboration on ideas and processes of their art practices. At The Table displays their outcomes and interpretations in a number of media. Free entry. Go to artsspace@wodonga.vic.gov.au or phone (02) 6022 960 for more information.
CREATORS ARTSPACE, WODONGA
ORIENT EXPRESSION
UNTIL AUGUST 24
Wodonga fine art photographer Paul Temple unveils his latest exhibition featuring photographs taken during two trips to China. Many of the works are in black and white, the ideal medium to capture the misty mountains of Yangshuo and Zhangjiajie and also the cobblestone streets and concrete buildings of many of the cities he visited. The exhibition celebrated the 175th anniversary of photography, a medium that Temple says has significantly changed the way we communicate. The exhibition will be open from 10.30am to 4pm Tuesdays to Sundays and there’re will be an opening celebration from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, August 16. Visit flickr.com/photos/camerart. Phone Paul Temple on (02) 6024 4885 or 0401 950 273 for more information.

ELVERY ART GALLERY, CHILTERN
THE FLOURISHING AND THE FRAGILE
UNTIUL AUGUST 30
This exhibition showcasing works by Tracie MacVean evokes themes concerning environmental issues and questions our role in relation to the natural world. She says: “Painting is my method to express myself; these paintings are my individual contribution to raise awareness in the fight against global warming and towards a more sustainable future. Nature and our ecosystem is portrayed in the form of a woman who we can directly relate to and understand her expressions. By exposing the fragility and the grief our Mother Nature endures we are forced to confront our relationship with the land that has given us life. I have a deep interest in capturing all the different facets of the mind; a glimpse of a face, a suggestion of a thought or perhaps an unanswered question. All these emotions we try to conceal and suppress.” The official opening is from 5.30pm to 7.30pm Friday, August 8. Elvery Art Gallery is at 62 Main Street, Chiltern and is open from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Sunday. For more information phone (02) 6043 1595 or 0437 181 160 or go to facebook.com/tracie.macvean.

NEW ORDER
UNTIL AUGUST 24
Louise Paramor is one of Australia’s most well recognised and celebrated sculptors and is widely known for her creative vision for residual and ephemeral materials. She was recipient of the prestigious McClelland Sculpture and Survey Award in 2010 and in 2012 her monumental sculpture ‘Panorama Station’ was commissioned for the Peninsula Link Freeway. Paramor works with found objects and plastics that are especially tactile and often striking in colour — characteristics that, not surprisingly, evoke an irresistible sense of whimsy and play. This exhibition showcases a selection of consumer-based plastic sculptural works, collage and abstract paintings on glass that challenge traditional readings of contemporary detritus in a fun and lurid way. There is also a serious side to Paramor’s practice and the significance and indeed resonance of her artwork can be found within religion, architecture, modern day urban life and today’s heavily consumerist culture. “I really enjoy experimenting with colour and abstraction ... and inspired by the very substance of paint itself … I have become more interested in the principles of modernist abstract sculpture and painting, and the cliches thereof, which in turn, informs my approach to the genre,” Paramore says.

JINDERA PIONEER MUSEUM
JINDERA HISTORY
OPEN OCTOBER TO APRIL
The first German settlers arrived in the Jindera area in 1867, having trekked from Adelaide in horse drawn wagons. Before they arrived, probably in the 1840s, a small wattle and daub hut was built just off the main track through town. This hut still stands at the site of the Jindera Pioneer Museum, and probably is the oldest remaining cottage or house in the Albury District. In 1874 Mr Johann Rosler and Mr Peter Wagner built a store and three room residence on this same sight. It became known as Wagner’s Store. Formed in 1967, the Jindera Pioneer and Historical Society purchased Wagner’s Store, the residence, and the grounds around the wattle and daub hut, and restored them to their original condition. It IS filled will all kinds of articles —furniture, household goods and machinery, gathered into an original and historic setting of old world architecture and charm. Wander through the fully furnished general store and residence and down to the Pioneer Slab Hut and the original wattle and daub cottage, and then on to the huge machinery shed with its large collection of farm machinery and equipment. The museum is in Urana Street, Jindera. For more information go to jinderapioneermuseum.org.au. Open daily, 10am to 4pm, October to April.

FINLEY RAILWAY MUSEUM
TRANSPORTATION MEMORABILIA
Finley was the first town selected in the 19th century for a Pioneer Railway. The rail was extended to Finley in 1898, at a time when NSW was experiencing financial difficulty. The Railways saved money by adopting the Pioneer Rail Standards for this, and some other stations that were connected at this time. The Pioneer system followed the US style to link into regional areas to boost trade and travel, but at low cost due to the harsh economic conditions of the time. Incredibly well preserved, Finley Station is one of the few Pioneer stations still standing, and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the on-site railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s.
