Police believe the accident occurred on Wednesday on the Murray Valley Highway, but the 65-year-old’s body was not found until 7.30am yesterday.
The woman’s car had run off the road across an open channel, hit an embankment and sank.
Police said she had got out of the Ford station wagon, but had collapsed three or four metres away from the vehicle and died.
An off-duty paramedic driving past the site found the woman before notifying emergency services.
“It’s just an unfortunate accident,” Leading Sen-Constable Shane Flynn, of Kyabram police, said.
“She was going to work for the day.
“She was heading to Bunnings in Echuca to do a job on behalf of a promotional company.”
The woman was travelling west on the highway, near McEwan Road.
Sen-Constable Flynn said it was not clear why the car had left the road.
The woman was reported missing after failing to arrive at her destination by a person, believed to be her husband.
Sen-Constable Flynn said there were no witnesses to the crash, which he believed occurred about 9am on Wednesday.
Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the white station wagon prior to the crash.
