The crash happened at the intersection of the Bandiana link and Anzac Parade about 9.10pm.
There were five occupants in a Commodore station wagon which was severely damaged after being hit by a Greenfreight truck.
Sgt Chris Parr said three of the occupants were taken to hospital with bumps and scratches.
He described the car occupants as “very, very lucky”.
“When I arrived at the scene, the worst flashed through my mind,” Sgt Parr said.
“The truckie did an excellent job.”
Sgt Parr said a company policy by Greenfreight to have no bullbars on their trucks was crucial in avoiding a possible fatal.
