ALBURY-Wodonga this week welcomes the new chief executive of the region’s cross border health service, Sue O’Neill.
Mrs O’Neill, formerly the executive director of nursing at Cabrini Health in Melbourne, takes over from inaugural chief executive Stuart Spring.
Dr Spring’s final day is Friday, a little more than five years after the merger of the Albury and Wodonga health services to become the nation’s first cross border health service.
Mrs O’Neill says her No. 1 priority will be improving the capacity of existing services to meet a growing demand for healthcare.
She identified a further priority of keeping a lid on costs while also meeting the demand for care and providing quality services that will ensure Border patients don’t have to travel away from the region for treatment.
Mrs O’Neill has paid tribute to the health service’s 1700 staff and 200 volunteers and wants to be an advocate for health professionals moving from metropolitan areas to the region.
She will oversee the opening of the new Border Regional Cancer Centre and ongoing lobbying for improved services including a new and expanded emergency department for the Albury hospital.
