The land parcel on the corner of Elgin Boulevard and Hume Street was no longer needed by the council after the realignment of Elgin Boulevard.
KFC will buy the 471-square metre site for $165,000 to refurbish and expand the business.
A second drive-through window will be installed, the facade upgraded and outdoor dining area expanded.
A report before councillors noted the expansion was likely to create employment opportunities during the construction and operation of the store.
Cr John Watson said the expansion had been a long time coming.
“It’s going to be a positive thing for our city, like a lot of things that have happened this week with the opening of Elgin Boulevard,” he said.
“This is just one of many businesses that are going to have frontage onto the new Eglin Boulevard.
“I’m excited about it and I’m looking forward to having new KFC frontage onto the road.”
Cr Anna Speedie was also supportive.
“It means more jobs, it means future growth and it also means better amenity and better services for our community,” she said.
“I look forward to seeing more of this.
“Good on them to actually reinvest in our city.”
