The man, 60, appeared for sentencing in the District Court at Albury on two counts of aggravated sexual assault on a victim under his authority.
Judge Martin Blackmore imposed a minimum term of two years and six months expiring on September 15, 2016.
The man has been ordered to have Probation and Parole Service sex offender counselling when released.
His daughter, then 17, travelled by train and bus to a small town near Yarrawonga in March 2012.
Her father took her to compete in a sporting carnival at Yarrawonga and booked into accommodation at Mulwala.
He had sexual intercourse with her when they first attended the motel and a second time at night.
The following day they returned to where he lived and she went back to Melbourne.
Police from Victoria spoke to her in August 2012, and initially she did not want to provide information, but subsequently made a statement.
She told police she feared her father.
Her father was arrested in Yarrawonga on September 16 last year.
