The man — who witnesses said smelt of alcohol — was travelling east on Melbourne Road near House Creek about 4pm.
The Ladgrove Builder employee failed to see a stationary SsangYong, which was turning right into a service road, and hit the car without braking.
The force of the impact caused the man’s Ford utility to bounce about 20 metres off the vehicle and he fled the scene.
Sen-Constable Paul Marshall said several people at a nearby worksite recognised the man, and his boss told police who had been driving
There were reports the man had been seen on Brockley Street and officers drove along House Creek in a bid to intercept him.
Police were still looking for the driver last night and called for witnesses to come forward.
The driver of the other vehicle — a 36-year-old Wodonga woman — was about to pick up her three children, two of whom witnessed the crash.
“He was flying, absolutely flying,” she said.
“I’m angry.
“It’s his responsibility to be here and do the right thing.
“I was just lucky I didn’t have my kids in the car.”
The woman, who asked not have her name published, said she had seen the man driving towards her at high speed and realised he would not stop.
Sen-Constable Marshall said police suspected alcohol had been involved.
“At minimum he’s facing charges of failing to remain at the scene of an accident, failure to exchange details, and possibly a careless driving charge,” he said.
“There were no signs of alcohol in the car, but a witness said they could smell alcohol.”
The man called his boss shortly after the crash, Sen-Constable Marshall said.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
