The Hockey Albury Wodonga women gave up two goals early in the rain before a spirited fightback in the second half.
A goal in the last minute of the game to the finals-bound Vikings sealed a 3-0 win.
Defender Chloe Jones said they simply decided to have fun.
“The pressure was off and so we just went out and relaxed,” she said.
“In the end we played some of our best hockey of the year and deserved at least a goal in the second half before a silly mistake at the depth gave them one.
“We were down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes when it was raining but in the second half we were right in it.”
Jones said fellow defenders Sam Daly, Rhianna Coleiro and Sadie Butler were the pick of the players alongside keeper Sam Campbell.
“Rhianna was clearly the best on ground,” she said.
“But Grace Ronnfeldt is another that deserves special mention — she turned 15 this week and yet controlled the ball in the front half and directed play without Nan Latta there.”
The men too bowed out of Capital League at the end of the home and away season losing 8-2 to ladder leaders Central.
The Spitfires trailed 4-0 at the break but were able to score twice in the second half in the last game at the National Hockey Centre in Canberra.
Hockey Albury Wodonga’s first year in the national capital will finish with the women in sixth, the men second last.
