IT’S a difficult time if you’re a young person seeking a job.
New figures show the number of young job-seekers in the NSW Murray region has almost doubled in a year to 15.3 per cent, forcing some to leave the region and others to chase other and better qualifications.
South of the Border, the situation has improved slightly with the number of young people in Hume seeking work down 1.4 per cent to 15.6 per cent.
That might seem like good news but the youth jobless rate in the region is still the fourth highest in Victoria.
One consultant said there were fewer opportunities for young people in simply a case of there being not enough jobs to cater for demand.
The hardest hit are those without a trade who cannot compete with those with qualifications.
Even those with previous experience in the workforce are finding it tough and can spend months in a fruitless search for a job.
Not surprisingly, many young people are concentrating on study or vocational training in a bid to gain the qualifications that could lead to full-time work.
The task of those studying is made even tougher if they have to work part time to fund their studies.
