POLICE are investigating what they believe to be a suspicious fire at Melrose Park Sports Grounds in Lavington overnight.

About 2.30am on Saturday, a number of people were heard to be yelling and calling out at the sportsgrounds.
Soon after at 3am a witness saw large flames coming from the club house and upon further investigation the witness saw the rear of the club house and roof were well alight.
Police and fire officers were notified and attended the park where the fire officers extinguished the fire.
It was reported to have spread to the outer and inner roof of the club house, causing damage to the exterior and interior of the building.
Gas mains and electricity supplies to the building were switched off after fire officers located a gas leak and called the utility companies to the scene.
Police are asking members of the public with any information to contact Albury Police Station on 6023 9299 or Crime stoppers on 1800 333000.
The area has been declared a crime scene and is under police guard pending the opportunity for forensic police and detectives to examine the club house later this morning.
Police said there were a number of people in the park leading up to the fire starting and they want to speak with them.
