Winnett was involved in a clash with Thurgoona midfielder Lucas Mellier in the opening minutes of Saturday’s Tallangatta league qualifying final at Sandy Creek and underwent surgery in Melbourne the following day.
His jaw was broken in three places.
The matter has been referred to AFL Victoria’s Enzo Bevacqua, who has 21 working days to complete his investigation.
The process can be sped up and referred to the tribunal if he believes video evidence of the clash is sufficient.
Footage of the incident was being circulated among sections of the crowd at Sandy Creek on Sunday.
Thurgoona will be sweating on the outcome of the investigation as it takes on arch enemy Mitta United in Saturday’s preliminary final, with the winner to play Kiewa-Sandy Creek in the decider.
Winnett missed the Hawks’ 2011 premiership due to a leg injury.
Besides Winnett, Kiewa-Sandy Creek is confident of taking a full-strength line-up in the grand final.
Mitta United played ruckman Paul Giltrap in the reserves at the weekend and he will be pressing for a promotion this weekend.
The Blues came through the match unscathed.
