HIGH-PROFILE Cudgewa recruit Michael Voigt reckons he has had better matches.
So he was a little surprised to be awarded the VCFL medal for best on ground in Saturday’s decider. Voigt was a vital cog in the Blues’ defence and provided plenty of run and carry from half-back and the springboard for many of the Blues attacking moves.
“It’s a big honour to win but I was a bit surprised to be honest and thought a few of the other boys probably deserved it a bit more than I did,” Voigt said.
“I just thought it was a great team effort to get over the line.
“Every time they challenged us we were able to get that next goal and keep them at arms-length.”
Voigt is a workmate of Cudgewa coach Bill Deery and returned to the Blues this season after playing for North Wang-aratta last year.
He previously played in the Blues’ two losing deciders in 2011-12.
It was the rebounding defenders second flag after also playing in Beechworth’s premiership in 2010.
Voigt was rapt that Deery was finally able to capture a flag in his final match after previously playing in six losing deciders.
“It’s awesome to know Bill can retire now as a premiership coach and player,” he said.
“He has had his fair share of heartache and it was special to be able to get the job done for him today.”
