Gateway Health has recently completed a mosaic version of a winning painting from an art competition held last year.

The competition was for Aboriginal artists to create a piece of artwork that embodied health and wellbeing for the Albury-Wodonga area.

Three paintings — Gateway to Health, by Kelly Lock and Marlene Plunkett, River Place, by Darren James Moffitt, and Strengthening Community, by Ellie Plunkett — were selected as the winners and hung in the hallway at Gateway Health.

“We wanted to add some vibrancy to the place and acknowledge the local Aboriginal community,” chief executive Leonard Peady said.

Gateway to Health was selected by a group of panellists to become a mosaic, and it now decorates the front of the building.

Ms Plunkett said the idea was to create a painting that embraced the entire community and its many cultures, with the people seen as individuals and as one.

“Most people see the river as a barrier, but it’s not. The river is the lifeblood of the community,” she said.

Ms Lock said it was a “good feeling” to win and be picked for the mosaic.

“It is almost an immortalisation of us. Friends, family, kids, can all walk past and be as proud as we are,” she said.
