While she said such a project seemed a pipe-dream, she hoped it could be a reality within a decade.
“It’s part of the whole picture of transport in the electorate and how we move people around,” she said.
“I’m keen to look at public transport for the future of our community.
“It’s a pipedream, but I’m certainly keen to talk about how we move into the 21st century with transport as petrol becomes more expensive.”
Ms McGowan said while there were serious issues with North East rail services that first needed to be addressed, light rail was on her long-term agenda.
“When the Albury Wodonga Development Corporation was formed in the 1970s, it was part of its public transit system to have some sort of light rail from Thurgoona to Baranduda,” she said.
“I think it’s important that we keep thinking about how people can move around on public transport.
“It’s something we need to consider as the population grows, but first we’ve got to get the rail system working.
“But light rail is something I’d like to see happen in my lifetime.”
Ms McGowan said trams that ran between Thurgoona, Albury, Wodonga, Leneva and Baranduda could provide a convenient link between universities and TAFE.
“There’s a lot of vision and knowledge in our community,” she said.
“Just because it hasn’t happened yet, it doesn’t mean it’s beyond our reach.”
