YARRAWONGA co-coach Chris Kennedy has hinted at changes to the Pigeons’ game plan after yesterday’s thrilling one-point preliminary final win over Lavington.
The reigning premier will take on fierce rival Albury in Sunday’s grand final at Lavington.
The Tigers booked their spot in the decider with a convincing 63-point hammering of the Pigeons in the second semi-final and Kennedy conceded Yarrawonga had to change a few things or risk being humiliated on the biggest stage.
“We’ve got to come up with something that gives us our best chance,” Kennedy said after yesterday’s win.
“We fully understand how good Albury is but you don’t have to be Einstein to work out that you’ve got to be in it, to win it.
“Getting there is the hardest part.
“It’s a credit to our little town to make six in a row when you look at how many local boys are running around there.
“We’ve topped up a bit but a lot of those blokes out there have played in reserves flags.
“I know there will people out there that say some things but one thing I will say is that our competition would have been very boring if Yarrawonga didn’t step up to the plate.”
Kennedy said he gave the Pigeons a chance in every game they played in and that Sunday would be no different.
Yarrawonga will enter the decider as rank outsiders.
“We know we’ve got the ability to score and I know they won’t stop trying,” he said.
The Pigeons will have plenty of stars full of confidence this week after strong second half showings in yesterday’s win.
Craig Ednie was sensational.
There were no big goals, or freakish moments but his importance in yesterday’s win cannot be undersold — he worked his backside off.
And he had plenty of mates.
“Ednie, Bonat, Leslie, Cooper have been together for so long and are just such a proud group,” Kennedy said.
“I said at half-time that there wasn’t going to be just one turning point. It wasn’t going to be won on five minutes of footy.
“It took us until the last couple of minutes to get there and we were very fortunate in the end to get there.”
