NO doubt there have been drivers in Smollett Street wondering just what the strange green lane there is all about.
The lane is for cyclists, but with not everyone in the know, some people have been parking illegally.
Cyclist Chris Pidd, who regularly uses the lane, says that about once a month he has been forced into traffic because a motorist has parked in the wrong spot.
It would be easy to blame motorists for not being considerate, but that would be unfair, given they haven’t been offered any direction on the matter.
Part of the answer was provided yesterday in the form of temporary signs, with Mr Pidd saying it had already made a difference, with every motorist heeding them and doing the right thing.
Of course there is a stinging incentive not to do the wrong thing in the form of a $242 fine and ignorance, as we have been forever told, is no excuse when it comes to the law.
With Albury’s bicycle crash rate of 8.6 per cent well above the NSW average of 5.6 per cent, bike lanes such as this one on Smollett Street are an idea whose time has come.
It would be wise to have permanent signs in place so everyone can be clear about the rules.
