Cr Jackson made the announcement via Twitter yesterday afternoon — midway through the Ovens and Murray football grand final — and later told The Border Mail he had the support of deputy mayor Henk van de Ven.
He said he was “encouraged” to run after discussions with Cr van de Ven, who is expected to tonight withdraw his own nomination for the role.
At present the only other nominee is Graham Docksey, who is understood to have the support of councillors Alice Glachan, Patricia Gould and Darryl Betteridge.
David Thurley was also named as a possibility to nominate, however Cr Jackson yesterday revealed the pair had already had “discussions”.
He said he had also spoken with Darren Cameron and mayor Kevin Mack, bringing his support base to four — though Cr Jackson said it was “premature to say I’ve got their support”.
“I’ll just throw my hat in the ring and see what happens on the night,” he said.
“It would be a good opportunity to develop further ... hopefully Kevin gets in again as he’s a good mayor to do that under.”
Cr Jackson and Cr Docksey both joined the council in the 2012 election.
Albury-born and passionate about rail, he is the national superintendent for the Centre for Excellence in Rail Training.
Cr Mack will renominate for mayor and is not anticipated to be challenged.
