The man, 32, crashed the Holden Commodore on Lawrence Street near the water tower about 7.15pm.
The impact snapped the pole and his car was about 1½ metres off the ground on the pole base.
The driver, who returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.204 — more than four times the legal limit — had his licence cancelled immediately.
His car was towed from the scene by Jacob Towing.
The crash was one of several incidents on Border at the weekend.
A speeding P-plater fled the scene after destroying a man’s Volvo on Townsend Street, Albury, on Saturday.
Other motorists said the driver had been travelling at high speed and doing burnouts near Hovell Street about 3pm when he lost control and smashed into the Volvo.
The car’s owner, John — who asked that his last name be withheld — said the crash had caused about $4000 of damage to his car.
“I think he was going fairly fast,” he said.
“There are always problems around the streets in that area with hoons.
“It’s annoying.
“It’s a good car that has never broken down in 14 years and it’s probably a write-off.
“He side-swiped all down the right side of the car and pushed the back wheel in.”
Witnesses told police a red or maroon Ford Falcon with red P-plates had been involved in the crash.
John said the car that hit him, which appeared to be a mid-2000s model, would require extensive panel beating at a panel shop if it was to be repaired.
In another crash, a young woman drove her car head-on into a tree in Wodonga after she veered on to an embankment on Saturday.
The woman, 20, was heading north on Parkers Road, Wodonga, about 2pm when her car left the road.
The road was closed and she was helped from her car.
She was taken to Albury hospital to be treated for leg injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol did not appear to be a factors.
