The Tangambalanga Child Care Centre was opened a month ago by the Jensen family, who wanted to see a small, intimate centre for the community.
They have 40 places for children aged up to five years old and service surrounding areas of Sandy Creek, Tallangatta, Bonegilla, Kiewa Valley, Osbornes Flat and Baranduda.
Owner-operator Fiona Jensen said the centre had two play yards with large trees such as ferns and a magnolia as well as veggie gardens and digging spaces.
“Some centres put plastic grass in their yards, but everything in our yards has been left natural and we have no fixed equipment,” she said.
“Instead children play with equipment brought outside from indoors, such as painting easels, cubbyhouses, slides, balls and walking boards.”
The centre provides an extensive nutrition program including breakfast, morning tea, a cooked two-course lunch, dessert and a late afternoon tea.
Lunches including tuna mornay, chow mein and sweet and sour chicken, are served with vegetables and the menu also includes raisin toast, yoghurt, sandwiches and fresh fruit.
Children are split into three age groups: possums (0-2), wombats (2-3) and echidnas (3-5).
Wombat leader Danielle Osmond said each age group had a different room with learning corners to develop skills.
The centre also allocates staff to walk children to and from the nearby kindergarten.
All the staff are qualified with between three and 25 years experience in child care.
The centre at 6 Huon Rd, Tangambalanga, is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm week days, excluding public holidays.
