JYE McBurnie has a busy two weeks ahead of him.
While most of his schoolmates might use their holidays to chill out, the 13-year-old Wodonga boy is planning an epic fundraising day in the name of breast cancer research.
He’s already booked out The Cube courtyard in Hovell Street for October 11; the fund-raising tins and merchandise from Breast Cancer Network Australia are on their way; and now he’s drumming up stallholders and getting local businesses on board.
And that’s not including his own contributions, such as baking cupcakes and slices for sale.
“Me and mum are working hard doing the organising,” he said.
“One in nine people have breast cancer in the world and that is a scary figure when you think about it.
“The disease is only getting bigger, not smaller.”
It’s not the first time Jye has used his initiative to raise money for cancer research — he’s twice shaved his head as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
His great-grandmother suffered both breast cancer and leukaemia, he explains, and so they are illnesses near to his heart.
“I don’t want other families going through what we went through,” he said.
Jye’s mother Sue said she was very proud of her son’s efforts and was happy to help.
Jye’s event, the Wodonga Breast Cancer Pink Market, will be on October 11 from 10am to 2pm at The Cube, Wodonga, courtyard.
