The Wodonga TAFE fashion design student spent six weeks creating an outfit for the Natural Fibre Fashion Awards.
She took out the student award following the fashion parade in front of 250 people, and was visibly shocked by the win.
“I’m still shaking ... it’s amazing,” she said.
“I’m shocked, surprised and elated to win.
“I’ve only just started making clothes but I’ve been designing them for a while.”
The show featured 85 clothing, millinery and accessory entries worn on the catwalk by Billabong High School students.
Mildura woman Judy Bond took out the top prize for her garment.
Show co-ordinator and compere Anna Dennis said Ms William’s entry was “fabulous”.
“I thought it was brilliant for a student to make something like that,” she said.
“It was different, it was edgy and it was on-trend with the denim.
“I was really pleased to see it win.”
Ms Dennis said the fashion show was a great opportunity for young designers to have their work critiqued by professional judges and paraded before the public.
“The entries covered the whole range of fashion — some are day dresses through to formal ball gowns, and hats were very popular this year,” she said.
“It seems as though too much is not enough when it comes to hats.
“I’m sure we’ll see some of those hats on our TV screens at the spring racing carnival.”
The award winners shared in $3500 in prizes.
“The entries were all very on-trend with denim colours and some very intricate designs,” Ms Dennis said.
“It’s one of the very few shows in Australia where people don’t have to pay to enter, so we got lots of students entering.”
The fashion show has been held at the field days for about 10 years.
