Salvage operations are expected to take most of the day and northbound traffic is being diverted to the Olympic Highway via Culcairn and Holbrook.
The driver, believed to be about 47-years-old, died at the scene last night after his truck caught fire soon after colliding with a tanker, at about 7.30pm.
Police have been told the tanker stopped on the highway due to mechanical faults, when the second truck came and was unable to stop, hitting the stationary vehicle from behind.
Emergency services attended and paramedics attempted to revive the driver.
The tanker’s driver was not in the vehicle at the time and suffered no injuries.
He was taken to Albury Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
One lane also remains closed to southbound traffic today, and northbound drivers are told to add an extra 30 minutes to their trip for the diversion.
