The Myrrhee woman had been driving on the Benalla-Whitfield Road on Thursday afternoon when she crashed the vehicle.
People stopped, concerned for her safety and asked if she was OK.
While the woman was uninjured, she was noticeably intoxicated, and onlookers offered her a lift.
“When they asked if they could take her anywhere, she said the Moyhu Hotel,” Sgt Michael Connors said.
“They gave her a lift.
“Police were notified of the crash and the fact the driver appeared to be alcohol affected.
“Police attended the scene of the crash and went to the Moyhu Hotel where they found the driver.”
The woman refused to undergo a breath test and will receive a summons.
Sgt Connors said it was unusual for people to refuse a breath test, especially a woman in her 60s.
“The ones who usually refuse are the ones who know they have been drinking to excess,” he said.
“She was identified as being the driver by the people who drove her to the hotel.
“Going by reports, there was substantial damage to the vehicle.”
If the woman is found guilty she will receive a mandatory two-year loss of licence and faces a substantial fine, Sgt Connors said.
“She will be appearing at the Wangaratta Magistrates Court in the near future,” he said.
Police are seeking witnesses to the crash and are asking people who were at the scene to phone Wangaratta station on (03) 5723 0888.
