Escebee won three of his first four starts over the spring last year to stamp himself as an above average galloper in the making.
But the four-year-old gelding failed to fire in three starts over the autumn where he finished unplaced at Bendigo and twice at Wagga.
Davison said there were excuses for that preparation and expected Escebee to prove ultra competitive first-up from a 19-week spell over 1000 metres today with jockey Simon Miller aboard.
“After the Bendigo run I just couldn’t get him 100 per cent right and with hindsight I probably should have sent him for a spell straight away,” Davison said.
“But he looks to have come back in good shape and today will tell us whether he is back to his best or not.
“He has got his fair share of weight and has drawn a tad wide and there looks to be a bit of pace in the race.
“Hopefully the track dries out and the drier the track the better it will suit him.”
Escebee has one win and one minor placing from two previous first-up attempts and has drawn barrier six in the 11-horse field.
