Jonathan Riley says there’s no reason for these trucks to use the Barnawartha-Chiltern Road.
Mr Riley submitted a petition to Indigo Shire last week with 125 signatures.
The petition calls on the council to remove the Barnawartha-Chiltern Road from the approved B-double route.
“There are no pick-up or delivery points for B-doubles on this road, so there’s no need for them,” Mr Riley said.
He has raised safety concerns with the trucks passing houses and a primary school, as well as using a residential street as a short cut to the Hume Freeway.
Mr Riley is also concerned about Frying Pan Creek Bridge where there is no pedestrian walkway.
“To walk across that bridge with a B-double beside you, it’s a very dangerous area,” he said.
“With the Murray Valley Highway and the Hume Freeway covering the same area, there is no need for B-doubles to come through Barnawartha.
“These two major roads cater for the heavy vehicle industry and run parallel to Barnawartha-Chiltern Road.”
Mr Riley believes the trucks are causing infrastructure damage to the roadway when they travel along Havelock Street as a short cut to the Hume Freeway.
Havelock Street is not an approved B-double route.
“I am concerned if there is an incident on Havelock Street involving a B-double,” Mr Riley said.
Another Barnawartha resident, Carol Freedman, collected a further 40 signatures that were also tabled at council last week.
Indigo Shire councillor Don Chambers said the council would consider the petition.
He would pursue the matter with the council.
