About 200 people attended the question-and-answer session on Tuesday night.
The event was organised by Strathbogie Voices, a grassroots group that has taken inspiration from Voice 4 Indi.
Five candidates attended — The Nationals’ Steph Ryan, the Liberals’ Tony Schneider, Labor’s Clare Malcolm, The Greens’ upper house candidate Jenny O’Connor, and Australian Country Alliance’s Robert Danieli.
All had the chance to answer prepared questions mainly about the Strathbogie Shire, before taking questions from the floor.
“Voices” spokeswoman Kate Stothers said the organisation was thrilled with the turnout.
“I got the sense from talking to people that there was clarification on where each candidate stood,” she said.
“Everyone appreciated the opportunity to get to know them better.”
Ms Stothers said the community’s input and interest bode well for other forums and discussions still to come.
Strathbogie Voices will not run or back an independent candidate.
