THE AEC has referred electoral fraud allegations from the seat of Indi to the Australian Federal Police.
Acting Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers released a statement this morning saying that "questions remained" regarding the accuracy of information provided by 27 voters enrolled in the division of Indi during the 2013 election.
He said the AEC's Electoral Integrity Unit found Commonwealth laws may have been breached and as a result, it had referred the investigation on to the AFP.
"The AEC intends to make no further public comment," he said.
The investigation is looking into allegations a number of independent MP Cathy McGowan's younger supporters changed their electoral details back to their family homes in Indi, despite living, working or studying elsewhere.
They’re also accused of encouraging others to do the same in a campaign of systemic enrolment fraud to boost Ms McGowan’s vote.
