First there was a race that reached speeds of almost 170km/h on the Lincoln Causeway on Saturday about 6pm, which is still a relatively busy time on our roads as people make their way out and about for the evening.

The 18-year-old driver lacked experience, according to police, while the car’s owner will be without his vehicle for 30 days (he was in the front passenger seat at the time). Police were disgusted at the drivers’ disregard for the public’s safety, and we as a community should be too.

But yesterday a video surfaced of another drag race, on an unknown day, between two cars on Wodonga Place.

Albury police have said they are investigating this incident too.

Is this pointing to a wider-spread problem of street racing on the Border?

One certainly hopes not.

The consequences of speeding and driving recklessly are well-publicised in the media and road campaigns these days, particularly the fact drivers that do so aren’t just risking themselves, but the lives of others. But some people still fail to get the message: Nobody is invincible.
