The 14-year-old’s 3/2 win over Daniel Krause was enough to give his side the win over Howlong in the first round of the Murray District Golf Association pennant season .
Similarly Matt Stenson, 16, showed his mettle with a birdie at the last to beat reigning Wodonga club champion Peter Miller.
Pennant team manager Neil Smith said Thurgoona would need its young guns to fire to play in the pennant final.
“Watching these kids play is just great fun,” he said.
“Zack was great in his first game at the highest level, while Matt was great for us last year and we have pushed him up to No. 2.
“We will also have Liam Gransden playing for us as another up-and-coming youngster.
“But we have lost both Danny Mills and Mark Emerson this year so they will have to do well.”
Jason Cawthrey had a comfortable 5/4 win, while Greg Daniels and Simon Hoppe halved their matches to give Thurgoona the victory.
Smith is expecting a real test when they play Albury at home in two weeks time.
The defending pennant holders easily accounted for Corowa on Sunday with Nathan Boehm and Bailey Stewart big winners.
“They had a big win and without some of their key players,” Smith said.
