Stevens, who led Albury into the 2012 grand final against Yarrawonga, was announced as coach by the Hume Football League club yesterday, with president Ted Brooks describing the appointment as a huge coup.
He will take over from Brett Powell, who had two seasons at the helm.
Stevens said yesterday the time was right to return to the coaching box.
“I was always going to get back into coaching and this seemed like a really good opportunity,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to getting stuck into it.
“I think it’s a good fit.”
Stevens said he still had a burning desire to coach after taking Albury to within 12 points of defeating Yarrawonga in the premiership decider at Lavington Oval in 2012.
He resigned several weeks later due to increasing work commitments.
Stevens guided Tatura to a flag in 2003 and was heavily involved with the AFL NSW-ACT as a high-performance coach.
Earlier in his career, he played 15 matches with North Melbourne and 50 for Central Districts.
“The Billabong Crows obviously have some work to do but I think it’s an up and coming club,” he said.
“We are starting to talk to players and look at what we need; hopefully we pick up some recruits in coming weeks.”
Billabong Crows finished in 13th spot on the ladder this season with three wins and are expected to target former juniors in a bid to climb back up the premiership table.
